Loctudy and Les Belles Isles

After the Raz, it was a fairly easy sail down to Loctudy … again, Liz and Rod had stopped there on the way to the UK with Bill Bullimore (yes … Tony Bullimore’s cousin) (say no more).

Again we pulled up onto a visitor’s mooring late in the evening … it’s hard to tell how late it is here because the sun does not actually set until around 10pm and then there’s a long twilight. Anyway, we slept quite late the next morning, then slipped our mooring and put ourselves alongside the visitor’s dock to rewater. Liz and I went up to the “Capitainerie” (harbour master’s office) to pay for the mooring. Nobody actually wanted to do anything about customs stuff, (they said to do it when we get to Les Sables d’Olonne).

So, off we went again. We had decided to go to Les Belles Isles, as it gave us a better run for the next leg. It was so benign, Rod and Liz started polishing the stainless steel … yes, I know … new boat owners with their pride and joy … I’m sure they’ll get over it soon …lolol. A good day’s sailing brought us into a bay on the SE corner called la Grande Village. There were 3 or 4 other yachts in there … and a bunch of mad French Kayakers who had decided to camp on the beach in the cove. I have come to the conclusion that all kayakers are nuts … although it is supposedly summer here, it is bloody cold at sea …. those guys must have been freezing their cojones off!

We actually used the anchor for the first time at Les Belles Isles … Rodney’s pride and joy … a massive Manson Boss! … the sort of thing you’d anchor an oil rig with! It went down and held well in sand and gravel … as I came back on the engines you could feel the inertia bump as it bit in. It came up beautifully clean the next morning … none of that Canaipa face pack mud thank you very much!
